What Is Single Grade Makhana?

Single grade makhana refers to fox nuts that are sorted into a narrow and consistent suta size range. It is used when uniform appearance, even roasting, and predictable quality are required in wholesale, retail, or export trade.

Single grade makhana focuses on consistency rather than volume efficiency. During grading, fox nuts are carefully selected so that size variation within a batch is minimal.

Single grade classification is part of the broader makhana grading system used throughout the Indian fox nut trade.

How Single Grade Makhana Is Classified

After harvesting, cleaning, and roasting, makhana is sorted manually or using sieves. In single grade lots, fox nuts are selected so that only a narrow suta band remains.

  • Restricted suta size range (example: only 4 suta or only 6 suta)
  • Lower percentage of broken or irregular pieces
  • Uniform surface appearance
  • Even roasting and seasoning behaviour

Role of Suta Size in Single Grade Makhana

Single grade makhana may fall anywhere between 3 suta and 7 suta. The defining factor is not the absolute size, but the narrowness of the size band within the batch.

  • Lower suta: higher volume, cost-sensitive retail
  • Mid suta (4–5): balanced pricing and appearance
  • Higher suta (6–7): premium and export-oriented trade

Refer to the makhana size chart for visual and trade comparison.

Single Grade vs Mixed Grade Makhana

In contrast to mixed grade makhana, which contains multiple suta sizes packed together, single grade makhana prioritises consistency over yield efficiency.

  • Single grade: uniform size, premium pricing, visual consistency
  • Mixed grade: multiple sizes, lower cost, higher yield

Where Single Grade Makhana Is Used

  • Retail packaging requiring visual uniformity
  • Premium and branded snack products
  • Export markets with strict size specifications
  • Applications where even roasting is critical

Quality Considerations in Single Grade Makhana

While single grade makhana offers better consistency, overall quality also depends on cleanliness, moisture control, roasting stability, and breakage percentage. Size uniformity enhances performance but does not replace proper processing.
